Overview

The Principal Developer – CPQ will be a key member of the CPQ Engineering team within the IT organization, responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, and supporting software solutions on the SAP CPQ platform.

The role is primarily focused on custom software development and engineering, with approximately 75% of the role involving software development activities and approximately 25% involving SAP CPQ configuration and implementation.

The role will develop and enhance capabilities that enable Waters' global Sales and Service teams to quote and sell more efficiently, while supporting business process improvements and contributing to margin and revenue growth.

As an experienced software developer with strong SAP CPQ expertise, the individual will work closely with software engineers, architects, business analysts, functional consultants, quality teams, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable, and high-quality software solutions.

The role requires strong hands-on development experience using IronPython, JavaScript, Knockout JS, HTML, CSS, and related technologies, together with a solid understanding of SAP CPQ capabilities and configuration.

The individual will follow software engineering and SAP CPQ best practices, Waters architecture standards, and Agile delivery methodologies, while contributing to continuous improvement of the CPQ platform.

Responsibilities

    1. Software Development & Engineering
    • Design, develop, and maintain custom software solutions within SAP CPQ using IronPython-based scripting, custom actions, custom cart calculations, and related development frameworks.
    • Develop complex business logic and reusable software components to support CPQ business processes and user requirements.
    • Perform UI development and customization using HTML, CSS, JavaScript/JQuery, and Knockout JS.
    • Design and implement integrations between SAP CPQ and other enterprise applications.
    • Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into robust, scalable, and maintainable software solutions.
    • Prepare technical designs and evaluate appropriate development approaches based on business requirements, platform capabilities, scalability, performance, and maintainability.
    • Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to software development standards and best practices.
    • Optimize application performance, reliability, maintainability, and overall system health.
    • Analyze application logs, system behaviour, and payloads to diagnose technical issues and perform root-cause analysis.
    • Develop sustainable fixes for production issues and contribute to continuous improvement of application quality.
    1. SAP CPQ Configuration & Implementation
    • Configure and implement SAP CPQ capabilities including product administration, guided selling, quoting processes, workflows, approvals, and Quote Document Generation.
    • Support SAP CPQ implementation and configuration activities in line with business requirements and platform best practices.
    • Support SAP CPQ integration with SAP Variant Configuration (VC) and Salesforce through the Clarity Adapter.
    • Analyze SAP CPQ-VC payloads and configuration behaviour to diagnose and resolve integration and functional issues.
    • Partner with functional consultants and business analysts to translate business requirements into appropriate CPQ technical solutions.

     

    1. Technical Leadership & Collaboration
    • Collaborate with software architects, developers, business analysts, functional consultants, QA teams, and business stakeholders to deliver end-to-end solutions.
    • Provide technical guidance on solution design, development approaches, code quality, and platform capabilities.
    • Participate in Agile ceremonies including backlog refinement, sprint planning, technical discussions, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
    • Contribute to engineering standards, development practices, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Proactively identify technical risks, dependencies, and opportunities for improving the CPQ platform.
    • Maintain clear and effective technical documentation covering solution design, development decisions, integrations, and operational support.
    • Work effectively with globally distributed teams and stakeholders.
    1. Production Support & Continuous Improvement
    • Provide technical support for production issues and business-critical incidents.
    • Investigate defects and performance issues and implement appropriate corrective actions.
    • Monitor application behaviour and error logs to identify opportunities to improve system stability and reliability.
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of the CPQ platform, development processes, automation, and software quality.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 10+ years of overall software development / application development experience, including experience developing enterprise applications.
  • 3+ years of hands-on SAP CPQ development experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing software solutions using Python/IronPython within SAP CPQ.
  • Strong experience with JavaScript/JQuery, HTML, CSS, and Knockout JS, preferably in SAP CPQ or comparable enterprise application environments.
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, Agile methodologies, software design principles, debugging, testing, and code quality practices.
  • Experience designing and implementing integrations between SAP CPQ and enterprise applications.
  • Experience with SAP CPQ and SAP Variant Configuration (VC) integration is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Salesforce integration through Clarity Adapter is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of SAP CPQ capabilities including product administration, guided selling, quoting processes, workflows, approvals, and Quote Document Generation.
  • Knowledge of SAP SD pricing concepts and Variant Configuration is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, debugging, and technical design skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex technical problems and provide technical leadership.
  • Experience working with globally distributed, cross-functional teams in an Agile software development environment.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
