    Overview

    Waters is seeking an Intellectual Property Counsel to be based in our Wilmslow site. We are looking for a capable candidate who can represent the company in matters relating to intellectual property strategy, intellectual property law, and other general legal advice where required.  The position holder will also be providing legal counsel on patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and other technology portfolio matters. If you are a self-motivated person who is capable of being an effective business partner and meeting business objectives in a timely and diligent manner, with limited supervisory oversight on work product, we would like to hear from you.

    Responsibilities

    • Primary point of contact for IP matters arising from Waters’ Wilmslow facility.
    • Advises the business on IP legal matters relating to the company, franchise or product teams, and business objectives.
    • Works with the commercial legal team on a variety of contracts and other areas as needed to ensure that intellectual property interests are protected.
    • Manages the IP portfolio for patent filings generated by the Wilmslow-based franchise or product teams, reviews and directs strategy for such prosecution matters.
    • Coordinates with the business and outside counsel to ensure that Waters’ interests are protected within a prescribed budget.
    • Provides legal counsel and support on intellectual property aspects of business development activities, including conducting due diligence, facilitating transfer of legal responsibilities, assisting and advising on other licensing-, acquisition- or divestiture-related issues as they arise.
    • Provides legal counsel and support on national and international litigation matters, patent office proceedings, trials, arbitration, mediation, or other dispute resolution proceedings.
    • Consults with outside counsel to provide advice in areas of outside counsel’s expertise.
    • Manages outside counsel spend within acceptable budgets.
    • Monitors and ensures compliance with Company policies.
    • Establishes and supports a work environment of continuous improvement.

    Qualifications

    Basic Qualifications

    • Law degree
    • UK Chartered Patent Attorney
    • Strong academic and science/engineering background

    Nice to Have Qualifications

    • Substantial recent IP law experience
    • Engineering, physics, electrical, chemical, or biological science coursework and an aptitude for understanding high performance analytical test equipment
    • Law firm or in-house experience litigating, drafting, or prosecuting patent matters
