  • Overview

We're looking for a scientist to join the development team in our small and friendly Newcastle office, to help us create our best-in-class scientific analysis software.

The successful candidate will have both experience analysing mass spectrometry data and laboratory experience working on the development of protein-based biotherapeutics. The successful candidate will be an integral part of our software development team - not writing code - but helping us to understand the science, analysis, and workflows involved with the applications we develop.

It's not necessary to be confident performing all of the tasks in this list. It's here to give an impression of what the role can involve:

    • Use your experience to help the team understand the software they're creating from a scientist's point of view
    • Further your understanding of the end user's scientific objectives through interaction and collaboration
    • Provide feedback on the software we develop and help to shape the product
    • Support the team by providing mass spectrometry data and the analysis of that data
    • Train external customers and internal staff on the use of our software applications
    • Represent the company at external meetings as a source of technical expertise
    • Maintain an awareness of competitor activities and product capabilities
    • Remain up-to-date on relevant scientific developments

We're looking for a scientist with experience working on the development of protein-based biotherapeutics (late-stage discovery, characterisation, clone selection, monitoring, QC).

We don't expect a complete match on all of the following items in this qualifications section. We're interested in people with:

    • A post-graduate qualification in a life science related subject
    • Experience using mass spectrometry in a biopharmaceutical field
    • Experience analysing peptide-based data
    • Experience of working in a scientific environment

As well as people who are:

    • A team player who is able to work with enthusiasm in a collaborative environment
    • A good communicator, able to explain scientific concepts to non-scientists
    • Interested in helping with the development of software applications

    What can we offer?

    A positive work environment

The Newcastle office is home to a small, experienced R&D team. We care about making good products. We care about understanding the science, and the user. We value team communication and collaboration. We work closely together and try to continuously improve. We support personal development in a way that makes sense to the individual.

The chance to really contribute and help change the world

The team in Newcastle is focussing on the biopharmaceutical domain; the products we're creating will help scientists all over the world to develop life-changing drugs. It's critical we understand the science, the domain, and the customer; working here you'll be a key member of the R&D team, helping us to understand and make the best possible products.

    Big-company benefits; small team attitude

Waters is a large company providing good employee benefits, including a company pension scheme and a healthcare package. Despite being part of such a large company, the Newcastle office operates as a small team. We have a flexible approach to work and maintain a friendly, productive working environment.

    An easy commute

Our core working hours are from 10 am to 4 pm (in a 37 hour week), meaning you can avoid the rush hour. Overlooking the Newcastle quayside, we're also just a couple of minutes' walk from the nearest Metro station and 10 minutes' walk from Central Station, so you might be able to avoid the roads altogether.
