For over 50 years, Waters Corporation has developed innovative analytical science solutions to support customer discoveries, operations, performance, and regulatory compliance. Specifically, the company designs, manufactures, sells, and services high performance liquid chromatography, ultra performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry technology systems and support products primarily in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Asia. Our innovations enable significant advancements within the pharmaceutical, life science, biochemical, industrial, food safety, environmental, academic and government industries. Waters is a publicly traded corporation (NYSE:WAT) with more than 6,500 employees and is represented in more than 100 countries around the world.

We're looking for a scientist to join the Applications Science team in our small but friendly Newcastle office, to help us create our best-in-class scientific analysis software. The successful candidate will be experienced in the Biopharmaceutical domain.

    What can we offer?

    A positive work environment

The Newcastle office is home to a small, experienced R&D team. We care about making good products. We care about understanding the science, and the user. We value team communication and collaboration. We work closely together and try to continuously improve. We support personal development in a way that makes sense to the individual.

The chance to really contribute and help change the world

The team in Newcastle is focussing on the biopharmaceutical domain; the products we're creating will help scientists all over the world to develop life-changing drugs. It's critical we understand the science, the domain, and the customer; working here you'll be a key member of the R&D team, helping us to understand and make the best possible products.

    Big-company benefits; small team attitude

Waters is a large company providing good employee benefits, including a company pension scheme and a healthcare package. Despite being part of such a large company, the Newcastle office operates as a small team. We have a flexible approach to work and maintain a friendly, productive working environment.

    An easy commute

Our core working hours are from 10am to 4pm (in a 37 hour week), meaning you can avoid the rush hour. Overlooking the Newcastle quayside, we're also just a couple of minutes' walk from the nearest Metro station and 10 minutes' walk from Central Station, so you might be able to avoid the roads altogether.

It's not necessary to be confident performing all of the tasks in this list; it's here to give an impression of what the role can involve:

    • Develop a deep understanding of the end user's scientific objectives through interaction and collaboration
    • Help the team to understand the software they're creating from a scientist's point of view
    • Work with the software being developed, providing feedback on its suitability
    • Train external customers and internal staff on the use of our software applications
    • Provide applications support to customers
    • Represent the company at external meetings as a source of technical expertise
    • Maintain an awareness of competitor activities and product capabilities
    • Remain up-to-date on relevant scientific developments

We don't expect a complete match on all the items in this qualifications section.

    We're interested in people with:

    • A post-graduate qualification in a life science related subject
    • Substantial work experience in a relevant industry and position
    • Experience using mass spectrometry in a biopharmaceutical field
    • Experience of working in a scientific environment

As well as people who are:

    • A team player who is able to work with enthusiasm in a collaborative environment
    • A good communicator, able to explain scientific concepts to non-scientists
    • Interested in helping with the development of software applications
