  • Overview

    The MS Research Group is focused on delivering innovative instrument capabilities of benefit to analysts in the research market segment, with a view to future evaluation and adoption in the routine analytical markets. The key purpose of this role is to support the development of critical capabilities through the design and development of mechanical assemblies within the group.  The role will be working within a highly dynamic, small-team environment where multi-tasking and flexible thinking will be critical. As such, the ability to apply skills in other technical disciplines, such as electrical engineering, are highly desired. The role will form an integral part of the Research team, and the successful candidate will be expected to make significant contributions in defining and delivering ideas that support the future success of the Company.

    Responsibilities

    • To contribute to the activities of the MS Research Team and initiate research projects, as appropriate, in relation to mechanical constructs.
    • To develop requirements and specifications to the highest standard and to produce all relevant engineering information to deliver functional prototype models and beyond. A view must also be taken on the transition of research prototypes towards functional products that would need to meet appropriate quality and cost targets.
    • To have an appreciation of the expertise & knowledge within MS Research and leverage this knowledge when required. Demonstrate clarity of thought and the ability to use first principles and emerging engineering technologies. Blending these ideas with practical scientific applications and business solutions.
    • To liaise with suppliers, academia, other research-based institutions and professional bodies to improve and/or gain knowledge of manufacturing techniques & cost effective manufacture.
    • To be familiar with our MS product range and keep abreast of developments in mechanical engineering to enable the department to initiate engineering developments to improve our product design. Attend any exhibitions, seminars or training courses deemed appropriate.
    • To comply with all company policies and procedures and ensure work meets our quality standards.
    • Peer-review and approval of engineering documentation, ECRs and drawings.
    • Undertake any other reasonable duty as defined by the company management.

     

    Qualifications

    • Degree in Mechanical/Production Engineering or equivalent.
    • Proven engineering experience to a high-standard of precision electro-mechanical assemblies and vacuum system design.
    • In-depth understanding and application of skills required to design mass spectrometers.
    • To be able to work using initiative & innovation in a design for manufacture and cost environment. The ability to leverage the scope of designs in order to maximise performance cost balance while understanding the user and market for these devices across the product structure.
    • Experience of working within a recognised quality system.
    • Unigraphics CAD experience or similar 3D system.
    • Experience of working directly with sub-contractors involving quotations & cost engineering.
    • Excellent communication, analysis and decision making skills
    • Ability to interact and contribute in a small team environment
